Applying or Renewing a Dog License
If your dog is over the age of four months, you must apply for a dog license. This dog license is for a set period of time in relation to the dog’s current rabies vaccine; therefore, renewal for your dog’s license will also be necessary. You may choose to apply for a license that is valid for a one, two, or three year period.
To apply or renew a dog license you must submit the following:
- A completed Dog License Application (pdf)
- Current rabies vaccination certificate showing it to be valid through the license period
- Spay/neuter documentation
- Proof of age and birthdate if eligible for discounted senior rate
- License Fee
Please note that the fees are discounted if: the dog has been spayed or neutered (certificate required), and/or if the dog owner/guardian is a senior citizen (proof of age required)
New residents have 30 days to obtain a dog license after establishing residency before incurring a late fee. If you fail to renew a dog’s license within 30 days after the date of expiration, a late fee will also be applied.
Upon receipt of the application, your dog renewal license will be sent to you within two weeks.
Dog tags are non-transferable and are valid for the lifetime and/or guardianship of the dog. No other tag will be issued unless the tag needs to be replaced.
Please make your check payable to San Francisco Tax Collector. Fees are non-refundable.
